Fremantle Traffic Bridge—Closure
536. Hon Steve Martin to
the parliamentary secretary representing the Minister
for Transport:
I refer to the planned
12-month closure of the Fremantle Traffic Bridge at the start of 2026.
(1) Taking into account the modifications and
mitigation measures being put in place, what impact will the closure of the
bridge have on daily commute times for ordinary drivers on weekdays during the
school term?
(2) In general, what is the average expected
increase to travel times for commuters due to the planned works?
(3) If these questions cannot be answered, can the
minister provide any modelling or information about the impact on travel times?

I thank
the honourable member for some notice of the question and provide the following
answer on behalf of the Minister for Transport noting that this answer was
prepared on Tuesday 27 May this year.
(1)–(3) Changes to travel times will
depend on a range of factors including the time of travel, origin and
destination, and the take-up of alternative travel options. The government has
already announced that the community should expect increased travel times as a
result of the closure, particularly during peak hour. The planned road modifications that have been
announced will help offset some of the anticipated increase in travel times.
Main Roads Western Australia and the Fremantle Bridge Alliance are also working
with the community and stakeholders, including local schools, to encourage
people to re-examine how and when they travel and are currently seeking
feedback around measures that could help lessen peak time demand on the road
network.
