TIMBER QUOTAS
Many people are concerned about the allocation of timber quotas. Rumours are rife that the businesses lower down the list will not receive a quota as the total designated wood will have been allocated before their number is reached. The business plans have been tendered and people are committed to the figures given. What is the list, in order of preference, for those businesses that have been short-listed for the grant of a timber quota? Hon KIM CHANCE

I thank the member for some notice of this question. This question relates to the request for proposals in the jarrah allocation process for grades one and two jarrah sawlogs. The 10 successful proponents in the first stage of the request for proposals have submitted detailed business proposals. That process has now closed and those proposals are being analysed. Hon Peter Foss: It is meant to be finished. Hon KIM CHANCE: No, the process has only just closed. Following consideration of those submissions, the Government will propose allocations in conjunction with offers of financial assistance for the proponents. Final allocation will depend on outcomes from those considerations and on certainty about the level of harvest decided under the forest management plan.
