PORT
HEDLAND — HOSPITAL SITE DEVELOPMENT
739. Ms R. SAFFIOTI to the
Minister for Lands:
I refer to the proposed apartment building to be built on the
old Port Hedland hospital site.
(1) Can the
minister confirm that Finbar was named as the preferred developer to build
short-stay apartments on the site in 2012?
(2) Can the
minister confirm that since this decision, Finbar has initiated a planning
change that will allow it to build long-term residential accommodation and
increase the zoning from R80 to R160?
(3) Can the
minister confirm that cabinet agreed to this change even though the Department
of Health said it would be inappropriate to support this change?

Although I will answer the question as best I can from my own
knowledge, if anything is missing, I undertake to provide that information to
the member.
(1) It is my
understanding that Finbar is the preferred developer for the hospital site and
it obviously needs to get to a level of financial closure before a decision to
develop is taken.
(2) It is also
my understanding—again, I will confirm if I have got it wrong—that
there has been environmental approval for that to occur under the town planning
scheme. The challenge for Finbar in order to get that to happen is simply
commercial.
(3) I am not
aware of planning changes but, with respect to moving it to long-term
accommodation, I will confirm that and undertake to get that information to the
member.
