COMMERCIAL BAIT FISHING — MANDURAH
335. Hon JON FORD to the Minister for Fisheries:
I refer to commercial bait fishing in the Mandurah area.
(1) How many bait licences are currently operating in the
Mandurah area?
(2) Do any of these licences permit
beach netting; and, if so, where?
(3) Do any of these licences allow
catching of table fish; and, if so, what species?
(4) If yes to (3), what restrictions, if any, are there on
table fish?

AnswerView source ↗

I thank the member for some notice of the question.
(1) There is one current licence in the west
coast beach bait-fish net fishery. This licence is permitted to operate in the
Mandurah area.
(2) Yes. The area of the fishery is defined
as all the waters of the Indian Ocean between the mouth of the Moore River and
Tim's Thicket.
(3) Yes. They allow the catching of any fish
species suitable as table fish that can be caught by beach netting. However,
the primary target species are whitebait and blue sprat.
(4) There are no
restrictions apart from those involving the gear and where it may be deployed.
