(1) There are 158 police stations in Western Australia, 37 in the metropolitan area and 121 in Regional WA. All police stations within the
Metropolitan
area operate 24 hours a day. However opening times for the general public vary.
Currently the following stations are open to the general public 24 hours x 7 days a week:
Perth Police Station
Fremantle Police Station
Joondalup Police Station
Cannington Police Station
Midland Police Station
Mirrabooka Police Station
Mandurah Police Station
All other smaller stations within the metropolitan area are open to the public generally from 8.00 am - 4.00 pm. After hours all phone calls are diverted to the 24 hour stations.
In
Regional WA
currently the following stations are open to the general public 24 hours x 7 days a week:
Bunbury Police Station
Kalgoorlie Police Station
Broome Police Station
Kununurra Police Station
Albany Police Station
Northam Police Station
Karratha Police Station
South Hedland Police Station
Geraldton Police Station
The smaller stations within Regional WA are open to the public generally from 8.00 am - 4.00 pm, depending on operational requirements. If police are not in the police station the phones are diverted to the District Call Centre. After hours all phone calls are diverted to the 24 hour stations.
Members of the public do not always need to attend a police station as the 131 444 number can be called for police assistance when
it is not an emergency, and
Crime Stoppers to report information about any crime, suspicious activities, or for information that may help prevent a crime. The police website also provides a range of information and online forms.
(2) The following police facilities have funding approval and are at various stages of development:
Burringurrah Multifunctional Police Facility & Relieving Officers Quarters - completion anticipated in December 2010. Estimated total cost $6.374 million.
Looma Multifunctional Police Facility & Relieving Officers Quarters - completion anticipated in mid 2011. Estimated total cost $6.138 million.
Yanchep Police Station - completion anticipated in August 2010. Estimated total cost $1.5 million.
Fitzroy Crossing Police Station - completion anticipated in late 2011.Estimated total cost $10.285 million.
Mount Magnet Police Station - completion anticipated in late 2011. Estimated total cost $8.213 million.
Perth Police Complex - completion anticipated in October 2012. Estimated total cost $113.27 million.
The Western Australia Police applies annually through the normal budget submission process for funding to upgrade or replace police facilities. The timeline for provision of a new police facility is dependent upon WA Police's State-wide capital priorities and the provision of funding through the State budget process.
(3) The Commissioner of Police is responsible for the allocation of police services state-wide. Western Australia Police undertakes continual monitoring to determine the ongoing demand for policing services to ensure a responsive policing service is provided to the areas of greatest need.
(4) On July 6, 2007 the Commissioner of Police announced the closure of the Trayning, Menzies, Gascoyne Junction, Wickepin, Cranbrook and Dumbleyung Police Stations and the relocation of Ongerup Police Station to Jerramungup.
The Government election commitment of re-opening regional police stations was to be undertaken through consultation with local shires and police to identify where operational needs most exist. As a result, Wickepin, Cranbrook and Dumbleyung Police Stations have since been re-opened and Jerramungup Police Station opened. The Commissioner of Police in discussion with the Minister for Police and the affected communities has decided not to re-open Trayning, Menzies, and Gascoyne Junction.
