(1) Existing alcohol and drug related services in Halls Creek include:
· Capacity to provide detoxification services at the recently upgraded hospital;
· A Sober Up Centre;
· Clinical Services Coordinator and alcohol and drug counsellors based in Jungarni Jutiya Alcohol Centre; and
· Access to the East Kimberley Ngnowar Aerwah 7 Mile Residential Rehabilitation Centre in Wyndham.
The Kimberley Community Drug Service Team and the Drug and Alcohol Office are working jointly to arrange for an immediate presence of two additional alcohol and drug workers to work in Halls Creek to support clients. This work is progressing well and it is expected that workers will be available in Halls Creek in June.
The Drug and Alcohol Office has also provided short term funding to enable Ngnowar Aerwah staff to visit Halls Creek each month (starting in June after a week of orientation) to support clients pre and post entry to their residential facility in Wyndham.
(2) Further community consultation is required to establish what additional services are required following the introduction of the alcohol restrictions.
The Drug and Alcohol Office is coordinating the development of an Alcohol Management Plan for Halls Creek. The plan includes elements of prevention, treatment and counselling, policing legislation and community action. The Kimberley Community Drug Service Team along with other service providers will also be working with local community members and groups to ascertain what ongoing support is needed and I will be provided with this information once is it available.
