I thank the member for some notice of this question. The coalition Government has embarked upon a $30m building program to enhance the capacity of agricultural research in the agricultural regions. This includes the new Great Southern Agricultural Research Institute in Katanning, which is worth $6m and was officially opened by the Minister for Primary Industry on 6 October. This facility will provide a new base for Agriculture Western Australia and includes six specialist laboratories, videoconferencing facilities, a glasshouse and a large shed that includes sophisticated storage and drying equipment. It is the latest example of first-class facilities the State Government has delivered to the regions since coming to government. The great southern region is important to the State's economy, producing approximately 2.5 million tonnes of grains each year. It is also a major wool and sheep meat producer and is leading the diversification pathway with new industries such as inland aquaculture. The new agricultural research institute will help these and other industries meet increasing challenges in the global marketplace.
