I refer to the minister’s second reading speech on the Mining Amendment Bill 2004, and in particular the first paragraph which refers to the incorporation of certain recommendations of the Technical Taskforce on Mineral Tenements and Land Title Applications and ask: will the minister table the recommendations and the report of the task force; and, if not, why not? Hon KEN TRAVERS

I thank the member for some notice of this question. I am advised as follows - Amendments to the Mining Amendment Bill 2004 were developed from the following recommendations made in the “Final Report of the Technical Taskforce on Mineral Tenements and Land Title Applications” and considerations of other recommendation by the Mining Recommendation Working Group. For this the member should see chapter 3 of the technical taskforce report. The recommendations state - Recommendations for Progressing Mining Lease Applications Recommendation 1 Reduction of Current Backlog Allow the existing applicants for mining leases to apply for new exploration/prospecting licences. Recommendation 3 Longer term, prevent backlog recurring Leave the processing of mining lease applications as they are but make changes to new grants of prospecting and exploration licences in an endeavour to prevent the backlog of future mining lease applications from occurring. I table a copy of the “Final Report of the Technical Taskforce on Mineral Tenements and Land Title Applications” and advise member that it is also available on the Internet, and has been for some time. [See paper No 2614.]
