I am advised that:
For the calendar year, from 1 January 2017 to 31 December 2017, there were:
(a) 7827 induced abortions.
(b) 558 induced abortions over 12 weeks gestation.
(c) 564 induced abortions for women under the age of 20.
(d) 83 approvals provided by the Ministerial Panel for abortions at 20 weeks or later.
(e) 78 induced abortions at 20 weeks gestation or later.
Notes:
(1) Parts (a - c) were sourced from the Abortion Notification System at the Department of Health while Part (d) was sourced from Chair of the Ministerial Panel.
(2) Note that there are reasons why the numbers of cases in (d) and (e) may be different: for example - fetal death in–utero prior to induction, spontaneous preterm labour and birth or a decision not to proceed to termination.
