(1) Through the Infant and Child Mental Health Planning Group, the Mental Health Commission in collaboration with the Department for Communities, Department of Health, and the Australian Association for Infant Mental Health Incorporated has identified dual strategies of:
· building the skills and capacity of the workforce to provide appropriate services to infants and their families; and
· developing quality integrated services for infants, very young children and their families.
The Mental Health Commission has invested $358,720 (GST excl) into funding of infant mental health scholarships that are being allocated in 2011-12, and has also allocated $878,000 in 2011-12 for Advanced Child Psychiatry Training posts and has committed to invest $1.1 million per annum thereafter to support five Advanced Child Psychiatry Training posts.
The Mental Health Commission in partnerships with St John of God Health Care and the WA Perinatal Mental Health Unit has funded a project officer to support the development of an integrated and sustainable community-based model of perinatal and infant mental health service delivery in the Local Government Area of Swan.
The Mental Health Commission is also progressing work on developing an integrated service pilot for infants, very young children and their families that will incorporate early intervention supports and services through to intensive specialised intervention.
