The Minister for Energy has been provided with the following response.

(8) One notebook computer was discovered missing but not reported as stolen. The computer was provided to a Manager in November 2005. The Manager subsequently resigned in July 2006 and the computer was not discovered missing until the annual stock take of assets was undertaken in July 2007. Attempts were made to locate the whereabouts of the officer without success.
(9) Routine has been implemented where staff utilising notebooks are required to return the notebook on their departure.

Western Power
(1) Four laptops were reported stolen. No palm computers were reported lost or stolen.
(2) $10,483.45
(3) Western Power's standard policies and procedures dictate that where possible, all data is to be stored on Network drives, or in our Document Management System, rather than on PC hard drives.
(4) There may be some data contained on the local drive of portable devices (eg. as part of Western Power's asset management application). This data is encrypted, providing the highest practical level of data security. Access to these devices is by secure login (user id and complex password).

(6) All stolen equipment is reported immediately, and the Police report number is recorded in our Register. Devices lost (or damaged beyond repair) are not reported as lost. Where a device is misplaced, a loan unit is made available to the staff member while they locate the original unit.
(7) No stolen equipment is recorded as having been recovered for this period.

(9) Western Power is soon to implement a new standard of hardware into service vehicles, using secure vehicle mounts. Additionally, a project is currently underway to update and integrate security at all the major depots, with a further stage to review the security at all other depots planned.
