Tobacco—Illegal supply
554. Mr Adam Hort to
the Minister for Health:
Has the Commissioner
of Police raised with the minister the risk that until tougher laws are
introduced, we will see organised crime shift its illegal activities here to WA,
and, if not, has the minister sought a briefing from the police commissioner?

I thank the member
for the question. Again, I think we have been very clear on the fact that our
government is working across agencies on this issue and that there are ongoing
discussions between me, the Minister for Police, the Premier and the Minister
for Preventative Health because one of the recommendations of the Australian
Council on Smoking and Health report was that there should be a multiagency
approach. That is exactly what we are doing, and I know that the member will be
happy to know it. We are working across agencies, particularly with the
Minister for Police, so that we can use and enforce the laws we have at the
moment to their maximum effect. The Premier, in his response to an earlier
question, provided details about the extent of the seizures and inspections
that have been carried out as a result. We also work with the Commonwealth
government on enforcement and reform, particularly with the Illicit Tobacco
National Disruption Group because we know that borders have an important role
to play in this. We are working collaboratively and looking at all the ways we
can enforce the current provisions and we are working on new laws that will be
introduced into this Parliament in due course.
