Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital—Maternity services
625. Ms Libby Mettam to
the Minister for Health:
I have a
supplementary question. Is the minister prepared to risk the lives of more than
200 babies by not having a plan—
Several members
interjected.
Ms Libby Mettam: They are the words of the clinicians
in black and white.
Several members
interjected.
The Speaker: Members! Member for Vasse!
Ms Libby Mettam interjected.
The Speaker: Member for Vasse, I am talking. I am
calling you to order for the first time. You do not continue to speak when I am
speaking, especially directly at you. I could not hear the supplementary
question because there were far too many interjections from the government
side. Member for Vasse, you can ask your supplementary, but ask it through the
Chair.
Ms Libby Mettam: Is the minister prepared to risk the
lives of more than 200 babies by not having a plan for babies who need
lifesaving surgery at Perth Children's Hospital, as highlighted by more than
200 clinicians in the state?
Several members
interjected.
The Speaker: Members! Member for Vasse, supplementary questions
are meant to be short and sharp. The last little bit you tacked onto it was not
required.

I reject the premise
of the member's supplementary, but I think it is important to remind the house
of the work that has been done and continues to be undertaken in relation to
extensive consultation. The former minister consulted extensively with
stakeholders and doctors not just at King Edward Memorial Hospital for Women, but
also Osborne Park Hospital and Fiona Stanley Hospital. The consultation report
had over 100 pages. The member for Vasse has heard directly from both the
current Director General of Health and the former Director General of Health. The
work to plan for the transition of services is ongoing. As part of that, we are
continuing to consult with clinicians. I totally reject the premise of the
member's supplementary question.
