STOP-AND-SEARCH
LEGISLATION
798. Hon LINDA SAVAGE to the Leader of the House
representing the Premier:
I refer to the Premier's comments reported in The West Australian of 4 October 2012
urging Western Australians to reconsider their opposition to stop-and-search
legislation in the light of the death of Jill Meagher and out-of-control
parties.
(1) How would
the stop-and-search laws, in particular removing the protection of reasonable
suspicion, prevent out-of-control parties?
(2) What relevance have the proposed stop-and-search laws to
the tragic death of Jill Meagher?

I thank the member for some notice of this question.
(1)–(2)
The comments reflected on the moving scenes in Melbourne following Jill Meagher's
terrible death where over 30 000 people took to the streets in a show of
solidarity against violence in our community. The comments were not intended to
make particular reference to out-of-control parties or the tragic circumstances
of Jill Meagher's death. The clear public sentiment on these issues
does, however, demonstrate the importance of the government being able to
deliver effective laws that improve public safety and protect the community's
right to feel safe on our streets.
