PRINCESS MARGARET HOSPITAL FOR CHILDREN — PAEDIATRIC
RADIO-ONCOLOGISTS
832. Mr R.H. COOK to the
Minister for Health:
I have a supplementary question. If the minister could
provide that answer by the end of today and, in particular, why were this
specialist's qualifications not the ones the minister was looking for?

I am fairly sure that that information is easy to obtain. As
I said, I had a verbal briefing—in fact, probably a written briefing—about
three months ago when this issue came to a head. Remember, this whole
discussion was around the oncology services at the children's hospital
at that time. As members would know from statements I have made to this house,
we have spent an enormous amount of money on increasing the standards of
service at that hospital, both through the committee that we established with
members of the public and, indeed, parents of patients at that hospital. We
have sunk a lot of money into this, principally from the Princess Margaret
Hospital Foundation, which donated a substantial sum of money to improve
services. Further, the Department of Health has provided a lot of additional
money for extra services for children at the hospital to improve their quality
of care. This was one of those issues as part of that matter. I will commit to
providing that answer before the close of business today.
