(1) Over the last few months, the Water Corporation has been drilling and testing investigation holes in the Yule groundwater aquifer. The work is not complete as drilling recently ceased due to the high rainfall in the area. However, testing results and groundwater modelling have indicated that potentially an extra 4 gigalitres of water may be available from the Yule aquifer. A licence application to abstract water is to be submitted to the Department of Water in March 2011 to seek approval for this increase.
Similarly, at the De Grey Borefield, a licence application is to be submitted seeking to abstract an extra 1 gigalitre from the existing borefield. There needs to be a pump station upgrade at the transfer pump station to facilitate the extra draw and this work has started.
(2) The Water Corporation is committed to the Pilbara Cities vision and is currently planning to invest in the order of $73 million in upgrades to the water supply infrastructure over the next three years to complete the necessary urgent works.
(a) Work required to complete the necessary upgrades has already begun with detailed designs planned to be completed in the early part of the 2012 financial year. The Water Corporation has completed high level project schedules for the urgent works and they predict practical completion dates will fall within the 2014 financial year. The Corporation is confident that the 2014 financial year prediction is achievable provided no unforseen approvals or other issues, delay the delivery of the works.
