STATE
BUDGET 2013–14 — SCHOOL HEALTH NURSES
427. Hon SUE ELLERY to the parliamentary secretary
representing the Minister for Health:
My question without notice was
originally to the Minister for Education, but it has been referred to the
parliamentary secretary representing the Minister for Health. It is C459.
I refer to the Liberal Party
election promise to provide $57.2 million to deliver 155 additional school
nurses for Western Australian schools, ensuring that every child has access to
school entry health assessments. Can the minister explain why the Treasurer's
budget speech and the WA Health section of the budget referred to an allocation
of $38 million, some $19.2 million less than the promised amount, to provide
the same additional 155 school nurses and a range of other components in
schools?

I thank the honourable member for
some notice of this question. The following information has been provided to me
by the Minister for Health.
The Liberal–National
government remains committed to the delivery of the additional 155 school
health nurses and speech pathologists. This is the first substantial increase
in school health nursing and speech pathologist FTE in decades. It is
anticipated that the budget allocation will still allow the employment of the
additional 155 extra school nurses within this term of government.
