RENEWABLE ENERGY
1180. Hon Dr BRAD PETTITT to the parliamentary secretary
representing the Minister for Energy:
I refer to comments made by the
minister in an interview that aired on the ABC's 7.30 program on
4 October 2023 in which he stated, ''We expect to achieve our stated
ambition of 82 per cent renewable energy by 2030.''
(1) Can the
minister please table the documentation that states Western Australia's
ambition for 82 per cent renewable energy by 2030?
(2) If not, did
the minister mislead the Western Australian public on the ABC's 7.30 program when he claimed that WA had a stated ambition of 82 per cent renewable
energy by 2030?
(3) Based on
current commitments, what is WA's renewable energy percentage expected
to be by 2030, and please table evidence of this if applicable?

I thank the member for some notice
of the question. The following answer has been provided to me by the Minister
for Energy.
The comment was specific to the south west interconnected
system, as the minister's answer to the journalist made clear. As the member knows, renewable energy
targets relate to energy markets, and the wholesale electricity market in the south west interconnected system is the only energy market in Western Australia.
(1) The comment
was made in the context of the commonwealth government's stated policy
of 82 per cent renewable energy by 2030 and the shared commitments that have
been made to that policy at national energy ministers' meetings.
(2) Not applicable.
(3) The SWIS
demand assessment models a projected 84 per cent renewable energy
contribution in 2030. This was released in May 2022.
