What a fantastic day
it was to go up to Kalbarri National Park with the member for Moore, and I
thank the member for Moore for the question. The Minister for Environment was
also there with us.
Several members
interjected.
The SPEAKER : Member for Mandurah, calm down!
Mr D.T. REDMAN : We all know that tourism in regional
Western Australia is one of those growth opportunities that have been
highlighted in all the regional development blueprints across almost all the
regions in Western Australia. It is a huge opportunity for growth. Right from
the history and heritage down in Albany to the wilderness up in the Kimberley,
a lot of tourism opportunities present themselves. This government has already
made some substantial investments to support the tourism sector, notably $46 million
of royalties for regions funds supporting the $60 million upgrade of Busselton
Regional Airport to take traffic in from the eastern states and $40 million for
the caravan and camping initiative.
Several members
interjected.
The SPEAKER : Member for Albany, I call you to order for the second time.
Mr D.T. REDMAN : The government has also allocated $20 million
to improve infrastructure and roads in national parks. When the government held
a regional cabinet in Geraldton, it announced an allocation of $20 million
towards the skywalk in Kalbarri National Park looking over Murchison River. On
the west loop lookout there will be two skywalks, one going out 20 metres and
the other one nine metres, supported by not only some interpretive information,
toilets and a kiosk but also making sure it is as accessible to young people as
well as people with a disability. We are absolutely convinced, given the work
that has been done through the Mid West Development Commission to highlight
such an iconic site with a key piece of infrastructure —
Mr M.P. Murray interjected.
Mr D.T. REDMAN : It is out of the midwest revitalisation
fund, member for Collie–Preston.
The SPEAKER : Member for Collie–Preston!
Mr D.T. REDMAN : We are absolutely convinced that this will
be a significant investment in a very attractive part of the midwest region,
supporting a substantial increase in the number of tourists going into that
region, which we know both directly and indirectly supports the economy. It is
fantastic to be a part of that. I pay tribute to the Mid West Development
Commission, Tourism WA, the Department of Parks and Wildlife and also the
Department of Regional Development for pulling all that together; it was a very
good day and we look forward to the opening of that iconic facility.
