With regard to Budget Estimates 2003-04 one of the Water and Rivers Commission’s major achievements for 2002-03 was to ‘target areas for investment to help improve the way engineering is applied to salinity has been achieved through the engagement of the community via seminars, workshops and communication campaigns. In addition a framework for regional drainage planning was developed’ (p641, Budget Paper No. 2) -
(1) How much was spent on the process of helping to improve the way engineering is applied to salinity through engagement of the community?

(1) The expected total expenditure on improving the way engineering is applied to salinity is $274,561 for 2002-03. The component of this expenditure that has been applied to engagement of the community is estimated at $50,700, which includes seminars, workshops, newsletters, consultant reports reviewing engineering approaches and establishing a steering committee for the Engineering Evaluation Initiative. (2) The expenditure for developing the framework for regional drainage planning was $25,500. (3) The expenditure on improving engineering application and the framework for regional drainage planning is slightly more than 7% of the Commission’s overall salinity budget.
