NURSING POSTS —
CUE
705. Mr V.A. CATANIA to the Minister for Health:
I have a supplementary question.
Have any health and emergency response plans and strategies been developed in
conjunction with the Wander Out Yonder campaign to support and resource
regional communities; and, if so, what are they?

As the member knows, the Department
of Health is participating in a number of programs associated with the recovery
package, including the $80 million maintenance and repair program for
hospitals, and the WA Country Health Service will receive somewhere between a quarter
and a half of that money. Significant spending is going on at the moment. We
are attempting to do more to create more sustainable practices in our remote
communities to ensure that we have the services to not only meet the needs of
the community, but also support staff to make sure they can provide the
services that we need. The WA government stimulus package funding will support
the upgrade of facilities, including to staff housing to assist in attracting
and retaining staff. Nursing positions at Cue and Yalgoo have been reclassified
to clinical nurse specialist post roles in an attempt to attract appropriately
skilled staff. In July this year, we successfully recruited a clinical nurse
specialist to Yalgoo, and regional relief staff members continue to cover
periods of planned and unplanned leave. We continue to work with all —
Mr V.A. Catania interjected.
Mr R.H. COOK : If the member
had provided me with a bit more notice of the question, I would have been able
to provide specific details about what happened last week in Cue.
Mr V.A. Catania : Have you
received a letter from the Shire of Cue?
Mr R.H. COOK : I receive a lot
of letters from the Shire of Cue, member, to make sure that we continue to
provide the resources in that particular nursing post. We will continue to
resource all our nursing posts as best we can to make sure they meet the needs
of the community, including making sure that the staff there have the support
they need. It is a priority for us because single-person nursing posts are a struggle
both for the people who use them and for the staff member in them. We are providing
the resources that are necessary.
