Is the minister aware that the tourism industry has supported efforts to educate the community about the economic and employment value of tourism; and, if so, will the minister advise what steps have been taken in this regard? Mr C.M. BROWN

I thank the member for Wanneroo for her question. The Western Australian Tourism Commission last year launched the “Value of Tourism” campaign. During the following 12 months, the commission ran a single component campaign every month highlighting a certain aspect of the tourism industry. This was a very successful campaign. However, it was noted that an easier way was needed to provide information to all members of the community, particularly to members of Parliament, about the value of tourism. The commission has produced as a gift for every member of Parliament this small card that can easily fit into a wallet. What will the card tell members? It will tell them that tourism generates $3.8 billion worth of expenditure in Western Australia, that it employs 8.7 per cent of the Western Australian work force and that it engages 880 000 international visitors. Mr C.J. Barnett: After two and half years, this is what he produces! Mr C.M. BROWN: The Leader of the Opposition never shuts up. He was a successful Minister for Tourism! He was minister for four months before being sacked by the then Premier. He was given the flick - he could not make it as he could not stand the heat. What a failure! He now has the audacity to criticise. He lasted four months. Not even a blink, and he was gone! Let me tell members about the card. Unlike the usual practice of the Leader of the Opposition, members will be able to cite a few figures upon receipt of this card. Members will be able to quote from the back of the card that in 2001-02, tourist numbers from the United Kingdom increased by 13 per cent; from Japan, by 13 per cent; from Malaysia, by 10 per cent; and from New Zealand, by eight per cent. These were real increases. The Leader of the Opposition does not understand real increases; all he understood as resources minister was making media releases about projects he was going to produce, but never produced. This card reverses that situation: it shows success, which is pretty foreign to the Leader of the Opposition. The card is available for all members to celebrate the success of the industry and to show its importance to Western Australia. The SPEAKER: I call the Leader of the Opposition to order for the first time.
