This is the state Parliament. If we
want to talk about taxes, let us talk about the land tax, which members
opposite put up on three separate occasions.
Several members interjected.
The SPEAKER : Members!
Mr M. McGOWAN : That gets them
animated! On three separate occasions, small businesses across Western Australia
—
Dr M.D. Nahan interjected.
Mr M. McGOWAN : The member for
Riverton—there he goes!
The SPEAKER : Member for
Riverton, I call you to order for the first time.
Mr M. McGOWAN : He is back in
the saddle and he is interjecting. I cannot understand what he is saying, but I
can see his lips moving.
Dr M.D. Nahan interjected.
The SPEAKER : Member for
Riverton!
Mr M. McGOWAN : Obviously, the record is there for all
to see. There were three rounds of tax rises for land tax. Members opposite
cancelled payroll tax cuts and stamp duty cuts that were scheduled when they
arrived in office back in 2008.
Dr M.D. Nahan interjected.
The SPEAKER : Member for Riverton, I call you to order
for the second time.
Mr M. McGOWAN : Members opposite put up fees and
charges by 90 per cent for water and electricity over their term in office and
they take no responsibility for the $40 billion worth of debt they left.
Mr D.C. Nalder interjected.
Mr M. McGOWAN : Here he goes, Mr Speaker—the
member for Bateman!
The SPEAKER : Member for Bateman!
Mr M. McGOWAN : I always love it when he interjects
because it allows me to segue. Obviously, the Deputy Leader of the Liberal
Party is there to protect the Leader of the Liberal Party from the member for
Bateman and the member for Churchlands—the two hyenas over there. They
are two vultures circling around. Look at them! They are two bald-headed eagles
over there, circling around.
Dr M.D. Nahan interjected.
The ACTING SPEAKER : Member for Bateman!
Mr M. McGOWAN : They are circling around, and the
bodyguard from Nedlands is protecting the Leader of the Opposition. I saw the
member for Nedlands in what I must say is a magnificent article by Josh
Zimmerman. What a great job he did! I am not a good fisherman, but you just let
the line reel out, and that is what he did. He let the line play out and away
went the member for Nedlands. I will quote what the member for Nedlands had to
say —
Point of Order
Mr A. KRSTICEVIC : Point
of order.
Several members interjected.
The SPEAKER : Members, he will be heard in silence.
Member for Carine.
Mr A. KRSTICEVIC : This has absolutely nothing to do
with the question about the federal government tax cuts. It is completely
irrelevant.
The SPEAKER : That is not a point of order. I am sure
the Premier will get back to the point.
Questions without Notice Resumed
Mr M. McGOWAN : Mr Speaker, I will conclude.
Mr A. Krsticevic interjected.
The SPEAKER : Do not query it.
Mr M. McGOWAN : I will quote the member for Nedlands —
''The last thing you want
is someone who is looking for the leader to fall over,''
''You want someone that is
supportive and in fact gives the leader advice so they don't fall over
and advice that makes them look good.
If the Leader of the Opposition is relying on the member for
Nedlands for advice on looking good, I suggest she go elsewhere for advice.
