(1) A CARE school is a non-government school established with a specific goal to provide education to students with severe social, emotional or behavioural problems who are at significant educational risk. Students generally are alienated from conventional mainstream school and have histories of chronic non-attendance and significant underachievement.
(2) CARE schools are established by independent governing bodies in the case of independent schools or by the Catholic Education Office in the case of Catholic schools. They are registered by the Minister for Education if they meet the requirements of the
School Education Act 199.
(3) Funding is by per capita grants allocated on the number of students enrolled and in regular attendance. Current State grants are $3 754 per annum for secondary students and $2 301 per annum for primary students. Current Commonwealth grants are $6 807 per annum for secondary students and $5 330 per annum for primary students.
(4) The pre-election commitment was to provide an additional $3m in the State Government's first term.
(5) The increased funding will be available over the next four years.
