ELECTRICITY
DISCONNECTIONS
894. Mr D.C. NALDER to the Premier:
I refer to responses to
parliamentary questions on notice received this week.
(1) Has the
Minister for Energy notified the Premier that he is overseeing the highest
number of electricity disconnections in the history of Western Australia at
almost 22 000 homes?
(2) When is the
Premier's mean-spirited government going to accept the harm it is
causing to struggling Western Australians?

(1)–(2) I
am aware of, and have spoken to the minister about, this very important
subject. As members will know, the government is continuing to address these
issues in a range of ways. Firstly, in the last budget, we put up fees and
charges in Western Australia by the lowest level in 13 years—since
2006.
Mr D.C. Nalder interjected.
The SPEAKER : Members! I want
to hear the answer.
Mr M. McGOWAN : In our first two years in office, our
increase in fees and charges —
Mr D.C. Nalder interjected.
The SPEAKER : Member for
Bateman, I call you to order for the first time.
Mr M. McGOWAN : — was
half the increase of the former Liberal–National government in its
first two years in office. We reinstated funding for financial counsellors,
including the Salvation Army and organisations such as that, we increased the
energy assistance payment and we increased the hardship utility grant scheme
payments in each of our budgets. We are doing a range of things to support
people on lower incomes across Western Australia. Obviously, the matter is of
concern and we will continue to put in place measures to improve the situation,
particularly for those people undergoing hardship.
