(1) (a) Fiona Stanley Hospital (FSH) is planned to have predominantly single bed rooms but with some 2 bed rooms . The overall configuration is 83% of all beds will be in single rooms. Single rooms are considered best practice for acute tertiary settings.
The additional costs are:
· Capital: $44,448,725
· Recurrent: $745,062 pa (base date December 2006). This includes cleaning, utilities, maintenance and refurbishment costs.
(b) None.
(c) The question is unclear as to what is meant by 'the original configuration'.
(2) There are no single beds wards at metropolitan tertiary hospitals. Wards are configured with a combination of multiple and single bed rooms.
(a) 23.3% of Royal Perth Hospital beds are single beds.
(b) 28.1% of Sir Charles Gardiner Hospital beds are single beds.
(c) 19.9% of Fremantle Hospital beds are single beds.
(3) Royal Children's Hospital (Melbourne): 87% single rooms - 13% double rooms (designed to be able to be converted to single rooms in the future).
Austin Repat (Melbourne): 30%
RPA (Sydney): 40%
Royal Women's Hospital (Melbourne) 50% single room
The proposed South Australian hospital is in the planning stage and no decision has been made on the proportion of single rooms.
(4) Examples of other major hospitals with 100% single rooms:
· Erasmus, Netherlands
· Trondheim, Norway
· UCLA Ronald Reagan Medical Centre, Los Angeles, USA
· Maidstone & Turnbridge Wells NHS Trust, United Kingdom (currently in planning/construction)
· All new hospitals in the US are now targeting 100% single rooms
· All additions and new wings to existing hospitals in the US and UK are also targeting 100% single (for example Shapiro Cardiovascular Centre, as part of the Brigham & Women's Hospital, Boston, USA)
