(1) My department has identified that industry trade areas in strong demand include: metal trades, construction trades, electrical/electronics trades and automotive trades.
In particular, increased vacancies were recorded for a range of occupations including fitter, metal fabricator, welder, air conditioning and refrigeration mechanic, carpenter/joiner, bricklayer, plumber, automotive electrician and panel beater.
(2) The State Government has made a significant investment in training, including $47.4 million announced in the 2009-2010 budget for a range of initiatives to increase training participation and skills development outlined in
Training WA
. A number of these initiatives support the increase in trade training, with the Government recently announcing an increase in the target for apprenticeships and traineeships in training to 47,100 by the end of 2012.
The Government is also ensuring that funding for training services for those trades is available to meet demand.
The Government is working with industry and employers to develop and implement further strategies to meet the training needs for trades through the development of the WA Workforce Development Plan.
(3) The first iteration of The WA Workforce Development Plan will be completed in June 2010.
