Denmark–Albany—Rest area closure
260. Hon Rod Caddies to the parliamentary secretary representing the Minister
for Transport:
I refer to reports
of Main Roads Western Australia closing a rest area between Denmark and Albany
due to a lack of resources.
(1) Can the minister advise why Main Roads does
not have the resources to maintain and manage the rest area in question?
(2) What alternatives to closing the rest area were
considered by Main Roads, and why were these not pursued?
(3) Will the government consider funding rest area
maintenance and management from the road safety fund, and, if not, why not?

I thank the
honourable member for some notice of the question and provide the following
answer on behalf of the Minister for Transport.
(1)–(3) Main Roads regularly reviews the
state's rest areas network to ensure that they are fit for purpose. Since
January 2023, Main Roads has constructed 11 new rest areas and upgraded 13
existing rest areas.
