PERTH STADIUM — FINANCIAL CONTRIBUTION
519. Mr P.B. WATSON to the Minister for
Sport and Recreation:
I have a supplementary question.
Should not issues as important as funding be secured before the minister
committed $1.57 billion on a stadium that generations of Western Australians
will have to pay for?

What the member is saying is a recipe in how not to deliver a
stadium. The member is saying we should hang about and wait for everyone else
to make a decision instead of making a commitment to the people of Western Australia
and the major sporting codes —
Several members interjected.
The SPEAKER :
Right.
Dr K.D. Hames interjected.
The SPEAKER : Are
you finished, Minister for Health?
Ms M.J. DAVIES :
What the member for Albany is suggesting would not deliver the project that the
government committed to. We are perfectly capable of delivering this. We have
approached the commonwealth and the AFL. I am hopeful. The Premier continues
those conversations, and all of our colleagues continue those conversations.
Mr F.M. Logan : I
thought you got the finance before you started a project!
Ms M.J. DAVIES : We
have the finance. The project is financed. It is progressing exceptionally
well. It would be wonderful if the commonwealth and the AFL put their hands in
their pockets to provide a contribution. I look forward to the day when I can
make that announcement. At this point in time there has been no contribution
from either of those, and we are very confident of still being able to deliver
a first-class stadium for the people of Western Australia.
