TRAIN LINES - SAFETY
After the horrific incident at Gosnells train station on Monday evening, will the minister please advise the house what the state government is doing to improve safety on our train lines? Ms A.J.G. MacTIERNAN

I thank the member for the question. Anyone who saw that footage last night would be appalled at the accident. We have been increasingly concerned over the past year about some of the behaviour on the trains and on the railway system and the implications that is having for safety. We have under way a trespass and safety campaign. We have brought over a young man named Jonathan Beninca. Jonathan was, on his own admission, engaged in some very unsafe conduct that involved throwing stones at a train. The stones ricocheted and pulled him under the train and he ended up losing an arm and a leg. That young man has rebuilt his life. We have been taking Jonathan around the schools to promote to children an understanding of how they need to respect the railway system and the potential that skylarking on the system has to create some very serious damage. We are concerned that there has been an increase in the number of young people, in particular, who are jumping onto railway tracks. Therefore, we have this campaign, which is one of a number of campaigns that will be unfolding. Some very graphic imagery will be used in some campaigns. We will place posters on the trains and visit schools to seek to increase the understanding by the train patrons of the potential lethal consequences of skylarking and trespassing on the lines.
