FIREARMS BUYBACK PROGRAM
591. Mr R.S. LOVE to the Premier:
I have a supplementary question. If
the explosion was not a media stunt, why was it released directly from his
minister's office to the media?

AnswerView source ↗

I
find it a bit rich that the Leader of the Opposition would come into this place
and seek to extend or go further in relation to any gun measures brought in by
the government in this Parliament. The Nationals WA completely opposed the
firearms reforms, which are about keeping the community safe. Why the member
should take umbrage at any of these measures is completely beyond me, because
he basically dealt the National Party out of community safety. He does not care
about community safety. He and his party turned their backs on Western Australians
who want to keep the community safe. Why he is coming in with these concerns at
this point in time is completely beyond me, because he has already suggested by
his party's actions that he just does not care about community safety.
He is not alone, because we know that the Liberal Party also opposed these
laws; whereas the National Party at least had the guts to get up and say they
oppose them, the Liberal Party just slinked out of the chamber when the vote
was taken—nowhere to be seen—and were completely silent on the
issue of community safety. I notice that those opposite have waded into the
media lately by talking about law and order and community safety, but when it
comes to putting their actions where their mouths are and when it comes to
walking the walk, not simply talking the talk, they are missing in action. The
Liberal and National Parties have deliberately turned their backs on community
safety in Western Australia.
