JULIEKA
IVANNA DHU
734. Mr R.H. COOK to the
Premier:
I refer to the tragic death of Julieka Dhu while under
government care last month, and the considerable confusion surrounding the
events leading to her death.
(1) Has the Premier informed himself of the circumstances of
this case; and, if so, what are they?
(2) Will the
Premier commit to providing all the information surrounding this situation to
the house as soon as possible?

(1)–(2)
I am aware of that case. It was a tragic death and sad loss of a young life. A
police investigation is being conducted into that matter, and I also understand
a coronial investigation is either underway or about to start. That is the
appropriate progression. Although I sympathise with the family and friends of
Julieka Dhu, I am not going to pre-empt those investigations. The matter lies
with the Commissioner of Police at operational level and also with the coroner.
If things went wrong, which it appears they did, hopefully the full truth will
come out.
