LITHIUM INDUSTRY
1543. Hon SOPHIA MOERMOND to the Minister Assisting the
Minister for State and Industry Development, Jobs and Trade:
I refer to the lithium price slump.
(1) Is the
government concerned about the prolonged lithium price slump and the loss of
local jobs in the industry, particularly noting that Australia is one of the
biggest exporters of the mineral?
(2) How is the government supporting
jobs in the lithium industry?

I thank the honourable member for
some notice of the question.
(1)–(2) It
is always disappointing to hear of resource companies winding back their
operations and my thoughts are with the
affected workers and their families. The state government has a range of
measures in place to support affected
workers into jobs or to upskill and reskill so they can take advantage of new
opportunities. All workers can access free career support by contacting
their nearest jobs and skills centre. The state government continues to engage
with the lithium industry to better understand its current challenges. These
challenges highlight the volatility of global commodity markets and reinforce
the importance of the Cook government's
work to diversify our economy and build more resilience into our resources
sector.
