Ms Hodson-Thomas questions the Premier about the cost of duplicated media monitoring services across government departments and suggests centralising the service. The Premier's response indicates previous investigations found centralisation not cost-effective, with no further study planned.

It has come to my attention that currently many Government Departments have media monitoring in process, which they obviously require to perform their duties effectively. I am concerned about the duplication of services, and as a result the cost to the State this represents. Can the Premier please advise -
(1) In the financial year 2004-2005, what did each Government Department spend on outsourcing media monitoring, and which private companies were used to provide that service?
(2) Will the Premier undertake to assess whether either the Government Media Office or the Parliamentary Library, both of whom perform extensive media monitoring services in any case, can undertake to make their service available via internet to all Government Departments and therefore remove this source of service provision duplication and unnecessary Government expenditure?

(1-2) Two investigations were undertaken by the Government Media Office (in 1989 and 2002) to determine whether the services should be expanded to include all Government departments, agencies and statutory authorities. However both investigations recommended against expansion due to cost effectiveness and the specific needs of departments. No further study is planned at this stage.
