I think it is worth getting into the debate some good notes
about the fantastic staff we have at Fiona Stanley Hospital, both
government-employed staff and Serco staff, who are doing an amazing job in
running that hospital. It was interesting to talk about the report we just
heard about. When I met with that group, they were congratulating the
government on the way the whole process had operated, recognising that there
were problems at our hospital that were reflected similarly in other hospitals
around the country, and saying we were actually a great example. They were
going to send people from other states to Western Australia to look at how we
set up, commissioned and ran Fiona Stanley Hospital because it was a great
example to other states. Sure, in their report they have gone through and
detailed areas in which there have been problems, as there have been in every
other hospital that has been newly commissioned in this state, but they were
extremely complimentary of the way it was all operating.
To let members know what has happened at the hospital since
that time: more than 8 800 procedures have been completed in the operating
theatres. There have been 120 000 outpatient clinic appointments and 50 000 emergency
department presentations, including 11 000 paediatric patients. I think that
supports our paediatric management plan of moving people away from Princess
Margaret Hospital for Children and out to the peripheral hospitals. The
hospital has carried out more transplants than we thought it would have done by
this stage. There have been 14 kidney, four heart and 11 lung transplants
during that time. Since Fiona Stanley Hospital opened, there has been an interim
assessment by the Australian Council on Healthcare Standards against the
National Safety and Quality Health Service Standards—areas that are
essential in showing that we have high levels of public safety and quality
care. FSH met all 158 core standards for the interim accreditation, with no
recommendations. That is a great outcome for the performance of the hospital
and we on this side of the house are very proud of it.
