I refer to recent incidents that have left one person seriously injured as a result of violence occurring at a nightclub in Perth.  Will the minister outline what measures the Government is taking to support the police in their efforts to do their job to make nightclubs safe? Hon N.D. GRIFFITHS

I thank the member for her very timely question.  As the member is aware - Opposition members interjected. The PRESIDENT:  Order! Hon N.D. GRIFFITHS:  As the member would be aware and as those opposite would be aware - Opposition members interjected. The PRESIDENT:  Order!  Members will come to order and the minister will address precisely the question, not members opposite. Hon N.D. GRIFFITHS:  Thank you, Mr President.  The interjections prevented me from hearing you when you first started to speak. Under the Liquor Licensing Act, licensees are required to minimise harm caused to people due to the consumption of liquor.  The Government wants to assist licensees to make informed decisions about security at their premises so they can meet this objective.  I have expressed to the Director of Liquor Licensing that the Government supports the installation of video surveillance cameras in all nightclubs in Western Australia.  I have also said that one of the conditions to be considered as part of the licence is that licensees should be required to retain the images recorded via a video surveillance system for a suitable time - at least a week - so that the police can have access to them.  The Government will support such measures as will help police do their jobs and prevent the type of behaviour we witnessed over the weekend from occurring again.  I would hope those opposite support these measures.
