My question without notice is addressed to the Minister for Tourism - Several members interjected. Mr R.F. JOHNSON : The Minister for Justice has been sweating like nobody’s business, because he saw me stand up earlier, but I thought I would give him an easy time today, so my question is to the Minister for Tourism. It is a very simple question; I am sure the minister can answer it. Did the Minister for Tourism attend last week’s Rally Australia event; and, if so, can the minister report to the house on the success of this iconic event? Mr M. McGOWAN

I can answer that question. I did attend Rally Australia on Thursday evening, and in fact I attended the Sunday wind-up event as well. I am surprised the opposition did not know that already. Mr M.J. Birney : We do! Mr M. McGOWAN : The Leader of the Opposition just said he does know. Do members know why the opposition knows? I have had a report from Tourism WA that the Leader of the Opposition himself rang a reasonably lower-level public servant in Tourism WA to ask whether I attended, and then did not identify himself to her - Several members interjected. Mr M. McGOWAN : - and, when he did identify himself, he behaved in a bullying and aggressive fashion. Those are the research skills of the Leader of the Opposition! He rings public servants and bullies them by using his position in this Parliament. Several members interjected. The SPEAKER : Order! It sounds as though the chook flu has already arrived in the chamber. We cannot hear the minister. Mr M. McGOWAN : I did attend Rally Australia on Thursday evening, and also on Sunday evening. I stand by my decision earlier this year that $6 million for one single event that returns $1.60 for every dollar invested by the state, when the average return is about $8 for every dollar invested by the state, is not a good return on investment. I am wondering whether the member for Hillarys still supports the Miss Universe pageant coming to Western Australia and the $20 million bill that would be added, and whether he still stands by the amazing remarks that he made about women in Western Australia. The member for Hillarys said that I was not telling the truth. I have the transcript of what the member for Hillarys said about women in Western Australia, and I will repeat it for the house, because I have listened to the tape, and what I said at that time is true - I think it’s a bit narrow-minded to start saying that we shouldn’t be exploiting women. Look, it’s going to happen anyway and if we’re going to have a pageant, let’s have it in Western Australia, rather than some other country. That is the view of the member for Hillarys. Point of Order Mr D.F. BARRON-SULLIVAN : Mr Speaker, I draw your attention to standing order 78 in relation to relevance of the answer. The SPEAKER : Order! The unfortunate thing about asking a question as broad as the one the member for Hillarys asked is that the answer members get is the answer they get. Question time is finished.
