I thank the honourable member for some notice of this
question. On behalf of the Minister for Police I advise —
(1) (a) Two full
days of training. Training is delivered on legislation in relation to
diversity, major religions in Australia and Indigenous Australians, and
practical site visits are conducted to places of religious significance such as
mosques and temples. All training is delivered with the WA Police values of
honesty, empathy, openness, respect, fairness and accountability.
(b) No
training is currently delivered to police cadets.
(c) Two full days
of diversity training are delivered to police auxiliary officers, the same as
for police recruits.
(d) Two full days
of diversity training are delivered to all re-engaging officers, the same as
for police recruits.
(e) Two full days
of diversity training are delivered to all officers coming from overseas, the
same as for police recruits.
(f) No
specific diversity training is delivered to police staff; however, aspects of
the training are included in the ethics training and also in the customer
service officer course.
(2) Although
there is no specific ongoing cultural diversity training for the staff referred
to in (1), the Aboriginal and community diversity unit attends courses
delivered at the Police Academy to address the needs of the specific programs
and courses. When completing diversity training at the academy, each officer is
given a practical reference guide to assist in dealing with different cultures.
