GOVERNMENT TRADING ENTERPRISES — BOARD MEMBER AND EXECUTIVE REMUNERATION
Two weeks ago, when the Treasurer was questioned about when he would bring the remuneration of board members and executives of government trading enterprises into the jurisdiction of the Salaries and Allowances Tribunal, as recommended in the final report of the Economic Audit Committee, he stated — As they get rolled over, they will come into a more standardised format. (1) Is the Treasurer aware that his government has appointed three new board members to the board of Western Power and reappointed two existing board members since he received the final recommendations from the Economic Audit Committee? (2) Is the Treasurer aware that not one of the six most senior executives at Synergy are employed on a fixed-term contract, meaning that the state government can renegotiate their terms of employment, including bonus payments, with four weeks’ notice? (3) When will the Treasurer publish the standardised governance arrangements for all government trading enterprises? (4) When will the Treasurer give control of the remuneration of GTE board members and their executives to the Salaries and Allowances Tribunal? Mr C.J. BARNETT

(1)–(4) In board appointments we get advice from the Salaries and Allowances Tribunal, but the issue here is the salaries and performance bonuses put in place by the former Labor government for the chief executive officers of GTEs. As those contracts come up, we will remove performance bonuses. Mr B.S. Wyatt : Your ministers must have signed off on the performance bonuses. Mr C.J. BARNETT : We will remove them. Several members interjected. Mr C.J. BARNETT : Because it is within their existing contracts, which were entered into by a Labor government. I think it is quite inappropriate — Several members interjected. The SPEAKER : Thank you, members! Mr C.J. BARNETT : — to have contracts with performance or profit bonuses for people working within the public sector. Mr E.S. Ripper : Your ministers should do their jobs!
