DEPARTMENT OF HOUSING — TENANTS —
RENT
45. Ms L.L. BAKER to the Minister for
Health:
I refer to the fact that Homeswest
housing tenants are now going to have to pay 25 per cent of their
pharmaceutical allowance as rent as a result of changes brought in by the
Minister for Housing.
(1) Was the minister consulted before
that decision was made?
(2) Does the minister agree with the
decision?
(3) If the
minister does agree, why is he supporting a 25 per cent tax on the
pharmaceutical allowance for Homeswest tenants?

(1)–(3) I
have no idea what the member is talking about. I know that changes were made by
the Minister for Housing relating to consideration of the income of people in
Homeswest houses in terms of paying 25 per cent of that income for rent. I recall
from when I was Minister for Housing that back then people were paying 25 per cent.
Some had locked in earlier —
Several members
interjected.
The SPEAKER : I want to hear this
answer.
Dr
K.D. HAMES : Some had locked in smaller percentages, and we moved people to
25 per cent. It is always difficult when there is an increase in commonwealth
funding for pensioners that those amounts should be considered, but, no, I do
not know the details. I suggest the member ask the Minister for Housing.
