Given that maverick Mt Lawley petrol station owner Paul Stinton now faces up to $800 000 in fines for selling cheap fuel and undercutting big retailers by changing his price in alleged contravention of the Petroleum Products Pricing Act, I ask - (1) Does the Premier concede that FuelWatch is not working and precludes independents from exerting downward pressure on prices? (2) Will the Premier consider amending the laws to exempt independents from the FuelWatch system, allowing them to offer discount prices to provide stronger competition to the major fuel retailers? Dr G.I. GALLOP
AnswerView source ↗
(1) No. (2) No. We have a good system here in Western Australia. Several members interjected. Dr G.I. GALLOP : Am I wrong? Did not that system emerge from a parliamentary report in the last term of the Liberal government? We implemented that report, and it is working extremely well. Several members interjected. The SPEAKER : Order! Dr G.I. GALLOP : Our system is the envy of the nation, because it gives consumers information. When we compare the overall price of petrol in Western Australia with that in the other states, we can see the advantages that come through. We will defend that system, because it is a good system.
