PALMYRA PRIMARY SCHOOL 150. Dr J.M. WOOLLARD to the Minister for Education and Training: My question relates to classroom temperatures of 44 degrees at Palmyra Primary School. (1) How many gas heaters are there at Palmyra Primary School, and how old are they? (2) For the model and age of the gas heaters at the school, are there standards or guidelines that govern when they should be replaced; and, if so, what are they? (3) Will the minister support a request by the school P&C that, rather than replace or repair those gas heaters, the government support the P&C if the P&C is willing to make up the difference in cost in replacing those heaters with another sort of system; and, if not, why not? (4) A review and discussion on air conditioners in state schools was undertaken by this government in approximately 2006, during its second term in office. Will the minister provide me with a copy of that review; and, if not, why not? Mr M. McGOWAN

(1) This information is not available in the short term. However, the Department of Housing and Works has been requested to provide this information. (2) A building condition assessment is undertaken at schools at regular intervals by the Department of Housing and Works. Gas heaters that require maintenance or replacement will be identified through this process. (3) I am advised that there are no plans to replace the gas heaters at Palmyra Primary School. As Palmyra Primary School is not in the air cooling zone, the department is unable to assist in the funding. (4) A review of the department’s air cooling policy was undertaken in 2002. No report was produced from the review, as only minor adjustments to the boundary of the air cooling zone were recommended.
