(1) In view of the recent outbreaks of ovine Johne’s disease in Western Australia, and in the minister’s electorate, has the minister been asked to consider a total ban on the import of live animals into Western Australia, either - (a) as a whole State; or (b) below the twenty-sixth parallel? (2) Has a for-and-against analysis of the impact of such a ban been considered by the minister’s department; and, if not, would the minister consider instigating such a study and reporting the findings to the House? Hon KIM CHANCE

I need to ask whether the questioner referred to bovine or ovine Johne’s disease. Hon W.N. Stretch:  Ovine. Hon KIM CHANCE:  I thank the member.  I needed some clarity about that because the question of bovine Johne’s disease has also arisen in that context. (1)-(2) I believe that the answer to the first question is no, and the answer to the second part of the question is yes; that is a process which is now being undertaken.  Having given the member those answers, however, I need to check them with the department to ensure that it has not taken action in the one or two months since I last discussed the matter with it, and I will get back to the member directly.
