I refer to the minister’s answer to a question on Tuesday, 2 March 2004 about the poor standard of police stations in country Western Australia. The minister admitted in her response that a lot of police stations and holding cells were not up to standard and that she had put in place a program to upgrade those facilities. (1) How much funding has been set aside in the minister’s 2003-04 capital works budget to upgrade each of the following police stations, considered to be in urgent need of attention - (a) Williams (b) Narrogin (c) Mt Barker (d) Broome (e) Carnarvon (f) Corrigin (g) Lake Grace (h) Margaret River (i) Merredin (j) Moora (k) Mullewa (l) Toodyay (m) Northam (n) Gnowangerup (o) Kojonup (p) Lancelin (q) Jurien (r) Bridgetown (s) Waroona (t) Manjimup (u) Gingin? (2) For those stations on which work is planned, please advise the amount allocated for, the timing of and the priority given to these upgrades. Mrs M.H. ROBERTS

(1)-(2) I thank the member for Roe for asking me that question this afternoon, because it gives me an opportunity to do a couple of things. The first is to thank all of our police officers in the great southern for the fantastic job that they do, particularly those who work out of the Albany police complex, which is a disgrace that we inherited from the former Government and are about to do something about. It also gives me the opportunity again to remind people that this Government has strongly supported law and order. We have increased the police budget by some $90 million. Of course, the member has highlighted the disgrace of the former eight years of the coalition Government when police stations and cells were left to deteriorate to an unacceptable level. Mr R.A. Ainsworth interjected. Mrs M.H. ROBERTS: The member asked the question and he should listen to the answer. Mr M.W. Trenorden interjected. Mrs M.H. ROBERTS: The member for Roe asked for an answer, so I have had the figures faxed down to me. The Police Service has provided the following information: Williams $10 590; Narrogin $23 820; Mt Barker $32 102; Broome $116 960; Carnarvon $321 460; Corrigin $18 750; Lake Grace $24 000; Margaret River $44 940. Mr M.W. Trenorden interjected. Mrs M.H. ROBERTS: The member is asking when it was all done. If the member had listened to the question, he would know that it is all about this financial year. Lake Grace $24 000; Margaret River $44 940. Mr M.W. Trenorden interjected. Mrs M.H. ROBERTS: They are embarrassed, Mr Speaker, because the Labor Government is spending money on every single station mentioned by the member for Roe. The list continues: Merredin $51 780; Leonora $20 150; Mullewa $29 866; Toodyay $29 940; Northam - this one is for the member for Avon - $106 960; Gnowangerup $33 319; Kojonup $21 140; Lancelin $56 940; Jurien $33 426 - Ms S.E. Walker interjected. Mrs M.H. ROBERTS: This answers the question that the member asked. The list continues: Bridgetown $52 150; Waroona $19 400; Manjimup $79 910; and Gingin $31 140. The member also wanted to know when the work would be done. Work orders for the above work have been issued to the Department of Housing and Works, which is implementing the work on behalf of the Police Service. The Department of Housing and Works advises that the majority of the work will be completed by 30 June 2004.
