ESPLANADE HOTEL, ALBANY — RESUMPTION
627. Mr P.B. WATSON to the
Premier:
I have a supplementary question. Before the election—six
months ago—the Premier gave the owners 30 days. When will the Premier act for the people of
Albany? This is another broken promise.

AnswerView source ↗

Clearly, the previous government would not have had the
capacity to deal with this.
Mr P.B. Watson interjected.
The SPEAKER :
Member for Albany, I call you to order for the second time.
Mr P.B. Watson :
The people of Albany don't believe you anymore. You're a
phoney!
The SPEAKER :
Member for Albany, I call you to order for the third time.
Mr C.J. BARNETT :
The site of that previous hotel is an absolute eyesore. Middleton Beach is just
weeds. For a long time people were hanging socks on the wire fence as a sign of
protest. I find that unacceptable.
Ms M.M. Quirk interjected
Mr C.J. BARNETT : I
have taken responsibility for this across government. It is a property action;
it is not a tourism project.
Several members interjected.
Mr C.J. BARNETT :
We are working on that. The owners have not been cooperative. If we cannot
conclude a transaction, I assure members that we will act to resume that
property. I made that very clear. Albany is a great beneficiary of this
government. The Liberal–National government's achievements in
Albany have been wonderful, none more so than the new hospital in Albany, which
is superb. The federal minister with responsibility for veterans will be in
Albany next week to turn the sod for work to start on the interpretive centre
as part of the Anzac Centenary. Indeed, the $6 million that the state
government used to restore Mount Clarence, including Padre White Outlook, has
essentially been completed. We have delivered in spades for Albany.
