I refer to Budget Paper No. 2, Volume 1 at page 272 "Spending Changes", line item "Growth in student numbers funding to reflect 2012 enrolments" and "Growth in student numbers funding to reflect semester 1 2013 enrolments", and ask: (a) would the Minister explain both items and the purpose in providing both items; (b) what was the total number of students based on 2012 enrolments; (c) what was the total number of students enrolled in semester 1, 2013; (d) what is the current number of enrolled students; and (e) what is the projected number of students to be enrolled in semester 1, 2014?

(a) The line items show the amount of additional recurrent funding received by the Department of Education, since publication of the 2012-13 Budget to Parliament on 17 May 2012. The additional funds were allocated for the growth in public school student enrolments above that provided for in the 2012-13 Budget Papers. The cost of educating these additional students continues into the current and future years.
The first line item, "Growth in student numbers funding to reflect 2012 enrolments" was approved by the Western Australian Government on advice from the Department of Treasury following the Semester 2, 2012 student census. The second line item, "Growth in student numbers funding to reflect Semester 1, 2013 enrolments" was approved by the Western Australian Government on advice from the Department of Treasury following the Semester 1, 2013 student census.
Both line items show that enrolment growth was higher than previously forecast in the 2012-13 budget settings.
The two line items fund the cost of educating the additional 10,132 students who were enrolled in Semester 2, 2012 and Semester 1, 2013 compared with the 2012-13 budget forecasts for that period.
(b)-(d)
b) Total number of students enrolled at 2012 Semester 2
268,523
c) Total number of students enrolled at 2013 Semester 1
276,275
d) Current number of enrolled students at 2013 Semester 2
277,326
Full-time students as at the biannual student censuses.
(e)
Students
2014 Semester 1
287,334
Projected full-time students, based on the Department of Education's System Performance projection model. The projection is based on historical enrolment figures and trends using 2013 Semester 2 student census data. Actual enrolments in 2014 will differ from this projection. Projections are normally reported at a more general level, for example rounded to the nearest thousand students.
