(b) what extra precautions does the government propose to take in relation to potential structural damage to nearby homes, given that some damage has already been reported because of work being done in 2001 and which has been reported to the responsible contractor?
Failure to develop a fast, direct rail link will see the intensity of freeway traffic increase which will be much more detrimental to the residents that the Hon Member speaks of. (b) A thorough survey will be undertaken prior to construction and the structural condition of local buildings will be checked on completion of work. We are not expecting damage, but any damage done will be made good. Again I refer the Hon Member to construction of the Northern Suburbs Railway through Warwick where these concerns were managed.

(a) I refer the Hon Member to the Northern Suburbs experience where the Mitchell Freeway reservation did not anticipate a railway. Through Warwick, the Freeway reserve is less than 90 metres wide and the closest residential boundary is less than 50 metres from the track. The railway and the local community function and co-exist in mutual benefit.
