(1) (a) The feasibility study for the Ellen Brook wetland is complete and designs are currently being refined with construction works planned to commence in January 2013.
(b) Five kilometres fencing and more than 50,000 plants were installed to protect riparian areas along priority sections of the Ellen Brook and its tributaries.
(c) This funding is enabling three wetland and living stream projects to occur in the Southern River catchment. Projects along the Williams Road Main Drain and at Riverside Lane, both in Seville Grove have been completed. Construction of a living stream adjacent to the Wungong River also in Seville Grove, will commence when the site has dried and will be completed by the end of the year.
(d) The Anvil Way Compensation Basin Living Stream project in Welshpool was completed in 2011. Contaminated sediments were removed and 48,000 plants were installed along a meandering low flow path to reduce sediments and nutrients from entering the Canning River.
(e) A total of 836 on-site inspections of small to medium size enterprises were undertaken in 2010 and 2011 in the Welshpool and Kewdale light industrial areas to audit for compliance with the
Environmental Protection (Unauthorised Discharge) Regulations 2004.
(f) Funding allocated to the Swan River Trust and Alcoa Landcare Program has helped support more than 30 community groups undertaking on-ground projects to improve water quality throughout the Swan Canning Catchment.
(g) In February 2010, 56 tonnes of Phoslock™ was applied to the Canning River upstream of the Kent Street Weir to remove phosphorus and help prevent blooms of potentially toxic blue-green algae.
(h) Nutrient levels have been monitored at the outlets of 15 sub-catchments that had not been regularly monitored before 2009. This is continuing and helping to guide future investment decisions.
(2) Yes. In September 2012 the Minister for Environment announced $1.5 million over three years to continue the implementation of the Swan Canning Water Quality Improvement Plan through a series of priority projects that will help reduce nutrient loads entering the Swan and Canning rivers.
