kimberley liquefied natural gas precinct — social impact assessment
I refer to the public events related to the social impact assessment for the Kimberley liquefied natural gas precinct being held at the Broome office of the Department of State Development on 10, 17 and 18 September 2009. Those events related to “Sense of Place” and a community open day. (1) Why is the “Sense of Place” consultation meeting an invitation-only event? (2) Will the minister table a list of invitees to the “Sense of Place” consultation? (3) If no to (2), why not? (4) Does the minister regard the community open day as constituting a formal public consultation event on the social impact assessment for the Kimberley LNG precinct? (5) If no to (4), will there be further social impact assessment consultations that are open to the public? (6) If yes to (4), does the minister regard the Broome office of the Department of State Development as an adequate venue for the community open day in terms of seating capacity? (7) If no to (6), why has this venue been chosen? Hon NORMAN MOORE

I thank the honourable member for some notice of this question. (1) This is a technical workshop to which representatives of organisations with relevant knowledge and expertise have been invited to provide information that can assist in identifying Broome’s “Sense of Place”. This information will form part of the social impact assessment input into the joint state-commonwealth strategic assessment of the Kimberley LNG precinct. (2) No. (3) As a matter of policy, the Premier does not provide the names of individuals in these circumstances. However, invited organisations include the Department of Planning, the Shire of Broome, the Broome Chamber of Commerce, the Western Australian Museum, the Heritage Council of Western Australia, the Kimberley Aboriginal Law and Culture Centre and the Kimberley Aboriginal Medical Services Council. (4) Yes. (5) Not applicable. However, Department of State Development staff will be available at the Shire of Broome forum being held on 18 and 19 September. This provides another opportunity for the public to find out more about the project and provide input. There will also be further consultation opportunities over the coming months as the social impact assessment progresses. (6) Yes. (7) Not applicable.
