There are a number of programs that have been attracted recently to the region addressing youth homelessness and unemployment. One example is the ‘Reconnect’ program, operated by Mission Australia, which identifies young people at risk of homelessness and undertakes preventative measures to reduce that risk. The ‘Mandurah - Peel Youth Commitment’ is a pilot program that has just commenced and is focussing on strengthening the school retention rates and the school to work transition for young people. Fairbridge Village has just commenced a ‘Pathways’ program that assists young people in life skills development, which has been jointly funded by Peel Development Commission, Disability Services, Federal Department of Family and Community Services, Office of Youth Affairs and the Lotteries Commission. A new program on homelessness is currently being developed through the National Homelessness Strategy of the Commonwealth Department of Family and Community Services, working through Centrelink. The City of Mandurah has been targeted as one of the eight national pilots. There is a sub-committee on youth homelessness, formed under the Peel Region Youth Services network (PRYS), that has been taking further action on better identification of the issue and specific solutions required. Calvary Youth Services manage a hostel in Mandurah for young people who are homeless, and investigations are being conducted on how this facility may be extended. The need for budget overnight accommodation has been identified and ways to achieve this are being discussed through PRYS and in other forums. The Department of Community Development, Office of Youth Affairs and Homeswest are also aware of the problems and there have been several discussions on what can be achieved. There is close coordination between the Peel Development Commission and the local offices to deal with both the issue of young people who are homeless and the systemic causes, such as unemployment and other social issues.
